“CommsRebel positively disrupting workplace cultures so you and your colleagues can thrive.”

Hello Reader,

Welcome to our updated news update called Rebel Unleashed. Across all our platforms, more than 500 people voted for this name, so it was a popular choice!

We listened to your feedback and shortened the update so you can scan quickly and pick the stories you want to read in more detail.

We've also added a new section called 'Everybody's talking about' to give you a flavour of what's happening in the industry so you can stay updated on the latest news.

Before I go, please check out my podcast, Building a Culture of Inclusivity, which I host with Priya Bates. The first episode is out Thursday, May 9, with Courtney Williams, Director of Communications for the Obama Foundation. It was a fantastic conversation. You can find us where ever you listen to your podcasts.

That's it for now. Let me know what you think of the new look.

ASK THE REBEL

Every fortnight, I pick a question from our vibrant Rebel Community and share my thoughts with you. This week’s question is: How do we get greater engagement with employee resourcing groups? My thoughts are at the end of this newsletter.

EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT…

Internal communications challenges and opportunities: VMA Group’s ‘Inside Insight 2024’ report highlights the skills needed to support leaders and organisations and is based on survey responses from nearly 600 UK-based internal comms professionals.

The history of IC: This is an interesting research project charting internal communications (IC) since 1880, which gives comms professionals a sense of the profession’s history.

Language is holding Gen Z back: Many young workers communicate casually, but this isn’t sitting well with all companies that see professionalism differently.

Managers essential in sharing culture: A new poll of employees says managers are crucial for individual professional development and overall company culture.

ASK THE REBEL *ANSWER*

Back to this great question: How do we get greater engagement with employee resourcing groups (ERGs)? Here are my thoughts…

1) Leadership support and involvement: Executives and senior leaders must actively participate and sponsor ERGs to ensure they effectively contribute to workplace inclusivity.

2) Clear objectives: ERGs must have a well-defined purpose and objective that aligns with the broader organisational strategy and goals. This will help demonstrate the value of the groups to both members and the wider organisation.

3) Allocation of resources: Providing resources such as budgets, meeting spaces, and time during their workday will demonstrate that these groups are important and ensure their effectiveness.
